A Chorus of Stones
Marina Pier, Glenelg SA, Australia
This war memorial has a centerpiece of polished granite depicting a sword, a wreath, and one simple word, REMEMBER. Around the granite disc are six large stones (in pairs) set into the footpath, one of each pair has an engraved word – loss, sacrifice, and silence. The three pairs of boulders signify the three wings of our armed services.

Celestial Reduction

The symbols references and materials relate to celestial navigation. This complex and accurate form of navigation, once sacred knowledge is now reduced to high technology equipment.

Chittleborough Lane Mural
Chittleborough Lane, Glenelg SA, Australia
Design and created by Vans the Omega, the Chittleborough Lane mural located just off Sussex Street was installed in 2015 to brighten up the dull lane and combat some of the ongoing graffiti vandalism that was happening at the site. The mural extends along the side and to the back of the building.

Event Cinemas Glenelg, Cowper Street, Glenelg SA, Australia
Artist Fortrose created a colourful and vibrant mural on the Event Cinema building along Cowper Street. The work represents shapes and motifs mixed with a fresh colour palette, soft undertones, and bold bright accents. This work also complements Fortrose’s other work along Milton Street.

Gene the Giraffe

Gene the Giraffe takes pride of place along the tramline Glenelg, he can be spotted by pedestrians and cyclists as they travel the Mike Turtur bikeway or tram commuters as they travel to and from Glenelg.

This sculpture was purchased by Council from the 2015 Brighton Jetty Sculptures Event and installed along the Esplanade as an iconic beachside work of art. -
Hove Sand Pumping Station Mural

The beachside artwork designed and created by artist Elizabeth Close was part funded by the Department of Environment and Water. Elizabeth is a Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara woman from the APY Lands.
The artwork design talks to acknowledging country, as well as travelling or walking along the coast and the beauty of the coastal landscape. -

Jimmy Melrose Memorial

This bronze head and shoulder bust was created by artist Ken Martin as a tribute to Charles James (Jimmy) Melrose (1913-1936). Raised on Glenelg’s Esplanade at Glenwood Mansions (now Melrose Apartments), Jimmy captivated the world with his aviation exploits across the globe. He established several Australian flying records and set world records, all within 3 short years. Tragically, on 5 July 1936, aged 22, Jimmy died on a charter flight from Melbourne to Darwin when his Heston Phoenix broke up over South Melton, Victoria in turbulent conditions. His death sent shock waves around the world as people mourned their 'chivalrous young knight of the air'.

Kitty Whyte
Brighton Beach Foreshore, 136 Esplanade, Brighton SA 5048, Australia
This sculpture is a memorial work to acknowledge Kathleen Duncan Campbell known as Kitty Whyte. Kitty lived on Yadkanulka Station, north of Port Augusta with her family. She would return to Brighton annually for the summer and taught the children of Brighton to swim. At the conclusion of one of her classes in 1926, Kitty dived from the Brighton Jetty and was fatally attacked by a large shark. Kitty was buried in the St. Judes Cemetery Brighton in the family plot.
