This sculpture is a memorial work to acknowledge Kathleen Duncan Campbell known as Kitty Whyte. Kitty lived on Yadkanulka Station, north of Port Augusta with her family but would return to Brighton annually for the summer and taught the children of the Brighton to swim. At the conclusion of one of her classes in 1926, Kitty dived from the Brighton Jetty and was fatally attacked by a large shark. Kitty was buried in the St. Judes Cemetery Brighton in the family plot.

The ‘Catching Squid’ artworks are nestled on the rocks near the Brighton Jetty and add an element of interest and surprise by passers-by. The bronze squid are a subtle addition to the Brighton Esplanade and sit proudly on the rock wall with the beach backdrop.
