The City of Holdfast Bay has responsibilities under the Public and Environmental Health Act, Development Act, and Dog and Cat Management Act. The Council also has the power to make its own regulations and by-laws.

About Council Meetings
One of the primary and most important functions undertaken by the Mayor and Elected Members is to attend and participate in the decision making process at Council meetings. Decisions made at a formal Council Meeting provide the direction and authority for the ongoing operation of the Council.
Hayama - Our Sister City
In 1997, the City of Holdfast Bay signed an agreement with the Town of Hayama in Japan, to formalise the Sister City arrangement between the two communities. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of this arrangement, another formal agreement was signed in 2007.
Our people are fundamental to our success as an innovative and progressive Council. We provide a diverse range of services to the Holdfast Bay community, so employment opportunities can include Professional, Administration, Planning, Community Services to Aged Care.

Council Committees and Workshops
We actively encourage members of our community to attend Council Committee meetings. On some occasions, meetings are closed when topics of a confidential nature are being discussed.
Councils are part of the democratic framework of Australia. The community elects their Council Members every four years and the next general election happens in 2018. Council elections are the biggest single voluntary civic participation activity in the State
The City of Holdfast Bay consists of four Wards, Glenelg, Somerton, Brighton and Seacliff. Each Ward is represented by three Ward Councillors
The publications that inform Council’s strategic directions and objectives. These documents are regularly reviewed and updated as required by legislation or in response to changes and community expectations.
All land within a Council area (except for land specifically exempt as prescribed in the Local Government Act 1999) is rate-able.
If the South Australian ‘crown’ has a jewel, surely it’s Holdfast Bay. The birthplace of this state, our homes, buildings and environment are rich in character and history.
