Volunteering helps create and maintain a thriving community, improving individual wellbeing and providing opportunities for self-expression. It is vital in the delivery of many of our programs and services.
Becoming a volunteer in the City of Holdfast Bay is a great way to connect with others. It can lead to new friendships, diverse experiences, skill development, and an increased sense of well-being.

We offer a variety of roles and are always looking to involve volunteers in our goal of serving the community in the best way possible.

Current Volunteering Opportunities

Please see below the roles across the council and those that are currently available. If you can't find a volunteer role that suits you, get in contact, and we can assist in finding you a position.

All applicants require a National Police Check. We can assist applicants with this at no cost.

Current Vancancies

Alwyndor has 2.5 acres of gardens, including our heritage wisteria Arbor, lawns, hedges, roses, vegetable and herb beds, and a new arid garden.

Several volunteering opportunities are available all year round for people with a passion for plants and the outdoors to help manage our beautiful gardens.

We are looking for people with experience using gardening equipment (e.g. mowers, trimmers), but if you just like to get your hands dirty, there are plenty of ways to get involved.

Whether you want to spend a day or commit to long-term projects, we would love to speak with you about volunteering in the gardens at Alwyndor.

Requirements: Flu Vaccination, Covid Vaccination. First Aid.

Hours: various between 8.30am – 3pm Mon-Fri

Provide one-to-one quality time with residents of Alwyndor who have requested a community companion.

The Bay Discovery Centre, Museum, and Visitor Information Outlet are looking for friendly faces to welcome visitors and assist the public with enquiries.
The role also includes assisting schools and group tours to learn about Holdfast Bay's rich history and culture.

Various shifts are available between 10am-4pm, Monday to Sunday.

We are looking for friendly, welcoming people to assist the Community Bus Volunteer Driver and passengers on the bus in accessing local shopping centres, libraries, and community centres and in regular and casual social outings.

Requirements: Flu Vaccination, Covid Vaccinations. First Aid.

Hours: 2h-3.5hr shifts.

Do you enjoy driving? We are looking for safe drivers to help residents navigate the local community and beyond. From shopping to social outings, the Community Transport program in Holdfast Bay helps people maintain social connections, complete their weekly shopping, and attend activities in the Holdfast Bay community and beyond.

Requirements: Flu Vaccination, Covid Vaccinations. First Aid. Current valid Driver’s Licence C, LR HR as needed

Hours: 3-3.5hr shifts.

HoldUp is the City of Holdfast Bay Youth Committee and is the voice for people aged 12-25 in the Holdfast Bay area.

We are looking for people to assist our Youth Coordinator in planning and delivering programs, events, and initiatives for young people in the City of Holdfast Bay.

Hours flexible as needed

The Brighton pump track just off Commercial Road is a much-loved community facility.
If you are physically fit and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, We are looking for people to support minor maintenance and safety associated with the bike pump track at Brighton.

Are you passionate about the natural environment and enjoy working outdoors? Help us conserve and enhance biodiversity within coastal and woodland ecosystems in Holdfast Bay- Training in native plants, weed control, and restoration techniques provided.

Requirements: working outdoors

Hours: Wednesday & Thursday Mornings 2-3hrs

To provide a regular Justice of the Peace service for the community

  • Brighton Civic Centre; 24 Jetty Road, Brighton between 10am and 12pm Monday.
  • Glenelg Library, 2 Colley Terrace, Glenelg, between 9.30am and 11.30am on Fridays, except on public holidays.
  • Saturday 10am – 12pm Glenelg Library

We are looking for people who can provide individual transport for older residents to navigate the community using their vehicles. Assist with food shopping, appointments, and errands that help maintain residents' quality of life and safety.

Requirements: Flu Vaccination, Covid Vaccination, First Aid, Valid Driver’s Licence

Times are flexible as needed. Personal Transport assistants are reimbursed for all expenses.

Are you a community-minded person? We are looking for people that can develop and support the growth of community centre-based programs at Holdfast Bay Community Centres. From providing reception services and administrative support to supporting social activities and the development of community gardens

Hours: flexible

We are seeking people with strong communication skills to support community understanding of safety protocols and programs for both environmental and social risks. We need volunteers to attend designated public areas within the City of Holdfast Bay and provide information (in the form of leaflets and hand-outs), answer questions, and signposts to additional support to assist the community's understanding of legislation and regulations related to community safety.

Alwyndor delivers onsite residential care and community and therapy services to the area's older population.

If you are handy and can assist with home maintenance, we are looking for volunteers who can assist with minor home maintenance for vulnerable people (such as changing light globes or smoke detector batteries, putting in safety rails and lock boxes, minor repairs, gardening, and pruning).

Hours: various between 8.30am – 3pm Mon-Fri.

To support the successful operation of the History Centre’s enquiry program. This will include customer service, delegation and research.

Hours Thursdays 10am to 4pm

To assist the Assistant Curator, History & Exhibitions in successfully operating the History Centre’s House History program. This will include customer service, delegating, researching, and editing House Histories.

Mondays 11am to 4pm

Have you got an eye for detail and know your way around a computer? We are looking for enthusiastic people to assist the volunteer programs with administration needs, including updating and maintaining records, making phone calls, archiving, and general administration.

The Glenelg Air-Raid Shelter was built in 1942 as part of a WWII communications network. It now houses exhibitions and memorabilia which tell the stories of Holdfast Bay

If you have a passion for history and are approachable with good communication skills, we are looking for people to support the Glenelg Air-Raid Shelter in preparation for and during times when it is open to the public.

Requirements; Be comfortable with confined spaces and managing steep stairs
Attend the third Sunday of the month 1-3pm

We are looking for people who are passionate about keeping our community pristine. This role includes attending designated parks and public areas within the City of Holdfast Bay to check & refill environment bags as required. an ideal activity to do to incorporate while walking your dog

The Holdfast Bay History Service is looking for passionate and dedicated people with a love of local history to assist the History team with administration and collection management, and help assist the public with their enquiries.

Hours: Flexible

The Holdfast History service has roles available for cataloguers, if you are a self-motivated person with attention to detail and accuracy then this could be the role for you. The role will also include answering phones and greeting walk-ins.

Let's Eat is a monthly community meals program. We offer both a Let's Eat Lunch and a Let's Eat Dinner program and everyone is welcome!

We are looking for friendly faces required to assist with the coordination of monthly community meals. The role involves providing social and practical support to ensure this event is enjoyed by all participants at locations across the Holdfast Bay community

Hours: 3 hours per event

Our Library Services have a range of roles for volunteers including

  • Shelf tidying
  • Material repairs
  • Processing new items
  • Selecting and delivering library items to community members who are isolated.

Partridge House is nestled in the heart of Glenelg, surrounded by a beautiful scenic garden

If you love gardening and are physically fit we are looking for people Support Partridge House with functions and event preparation. Maintain the grounds in a suitable condition for resident enjoyment. Activities include weeding garden beds, removing any dead/dying foliage, pruning & weeding (in consultation with horticulture) removal of obstructions from paths i.e. fallen debris

Volunteering FAQs

The majority of volunteer roles are designed for people who are 18 years and older however there are occasionally opportunities for younger people to volunteer with their parent or guardian. Our Volunteer Coordinator is happy to discuss options

Yes. All volunteers will be required to undergo a police check as part of the pre-engagement process. This will be free of charge, and the clearance will need to be renewed every three years.

Thank you for your interest. The City of Holdfast Bay acknowledges that student and work experience placements provide an opportunity for individuals within our community to gain insight into the local council. Please note that these opportunities are not considered part of our volunteer program.

Yes, we are happy to provide a reference. However, you need to have regularly volunteered with Council for a minimum period of three months.
