Susan Grace Benny (1872 – 1944) became Australia’s first female politician when she was appointed to represent the newly created South Ward of Brighton in 1919. A courageous and energetic woman, she served two terms and was the President of the Women’s Branch of the Southern Liberal Union in 1918, where she played a key role in the passage of legislation securing equality of divorce for women.
