Citizenship Ceremonies

Citizenship Ceremonies

A citizenship ceremony is a special event during which citizenship candidates pledge allegiance to Australia and are officially pronounced Australian Citizens.

Receiving Australian Citizenship is often an emotional experience for candidates, therefore the City of Holdfast Bay aims to create a relaxed and joyful atmosphere to celebrate this special milestone.

The City of Holdfast Bay hosts approximately four ceremonies per year on Australia Day at the Brighton Performing Arts Centre or on the Glenelg Foreshore.

About the ceremony

The Australian Citizenship Ceremony is a formal occasion that takes approximately one hour.

It consists of 40-60 conferees and their friends and family who are invited to attend.

During the ceremony, candidates are asked to make the Pledge of Commitment. This pledge must be recited in English (words are available at the ceremony) in order to receive the Certificate of Australian Citizenship.

Members of Parliament, Councillors and special guests are invited to attend the ceremony.

Children receive their own certificate, however, they are not required to take the pledge if they are under the age of 16.
