Wellbeing in the canopy
The majestic presence of this SA blue gum inspired Kingston Park resident David Kelly to nominate it as our first Tree of the Month for 2026.
Located on the corner of Cameron Avenue and Bandon Terrace, the towering blue gum is a significant tree estimated to be between 50 and 75 years old.
David, who previously served as South Australia’s Mental Health Commissioner, has seen firsthand the powerful role greenery plays in supporting mental health. “Working in mental health and wellbeing, I absolutely understand the impact of exposure to nature and natural features as an important part of our wellbeing.”
While the tree does present some challenges – including shedding up to 200 kilograms of bark each summer – David says it’s well worth it. “It’s an amazing big old tree and we feel privileged to have it in our area. When the old bark is gone, the colour of the new wood is just beautiful.”
The Tree of the Month campaign, launched in April 2021, raises awareness of the many benefits trees provide, including shade, cooling, clean air, wildlife habitat, wellbeing and a connection to nature.
