Local heroes celebrated, new Australians welcomed
A marine scientist, a young athlete, dedicated community volunteers and a doctor who challenges age stereotypes through social media were among the local heroes awarded at today’s Australia Day awards and citizenship ceremony.
Another 64 people, from 24 different countries, also took their pledge to become Australian citizens, joining more than 18,000 people from 150 countries taking parting in citizenship ceremonies across the country.
Marine environmental scientist Michelle Blewitt was named Holdfast Bay’s Citizen of the Year, for her work with Tangaroa Blue Foundation and her extensive volunteer efforts promoting sustainability and community wellbeing.
Beyond environmental advocacy, she contributes to numerous organisations, including the Brighton Surf Life Saving Club, Brighton Jetty Classic committee and local charities.
Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson presented Michelle with her award saying Michelle demonstrates a “deep commitment to people, place and planet”.
Brighton surf life saver, Jacob Newrick, was named Young Citizen of the Year for logging the most patrol hours in the past two seasons, while also being a key member of the IRB (inflatable rescue boat) team, a state competitor, a water safety instructor and volunteer at state events. The teenager is also involved in the Coastal Districts Little Athletics Club.
“Jacob is an inspiring role model for younger members and the wider community,” Mayor Wilson said.
The Asia Oasis Street Food Festival by the Sea event, which is taking place again next month, was named the winner of the Community Event of the Year award.
Event coordinator Duc Pham accepted the award for the event which is now in its fourth year and celebrates Asian cultural diversity through authentic food, arts and performances, fostering cross-cultural understanding and social harmony.
The 2026 event will be held at Jimmy Melrose Park, Glenelg from Friday 13 February to Sunday 22 February 2026.
Four people received the Award for Active Citizenship, including Kathryn Casey who was honoured for her outstanding impact on the Brighton community through her long-standing commitment to service.
As Grants and Sponsorship director for the Brighton Surf Life Saving Club, she has secured vital funding for lifesaving operations, community programs and major events and is also heavily involved in the Brighton Jetty Sculptures event.
“Her tireless volunteerism and collaborative spirit continue to inspire others and strengthen the social, cultural and recreational fabric of Holdfast Bay,” Mayor Wilson said.
For almost 50 years, Petra and Chris Ashton have shown an unwavering commitment to helping others with their involvement in the Noarlunga/Morphett Vale Lions Club. They’ve also been involved in coordinating neighbourhood events, leading the Marilyn Jetty Swim Yester volunteer team and playing a pivotal role in achieving a Guinness World Record for the most people dressed as Marilyn Monroe.
Mayor Wilson said “their unwavering commitment to helping others reflects a lifetime of service that has inspired countless individuals and strengthened the social fabric of Holdfast Bay”.
Leadership, advocacy and a lifelong commitment to service were among the reasons Dr Kaye Cleave received an Active Citizenship award, along with her experience as a teacher, researcher, meditation guide, challenger of age stereotypes and promoter of inclusion, wellness and emotional resilience.
“With a career spanning schools, a Buddhist monastery, and even a maximum-security prison, Dr Cleave has shared knowledge and empathy that empower others,” Mayor Wilson said.
“By fostering open conversations around grief, purpose and healthy ageing, she has enriched communities locally and internationally, helping people find dignity and joy throughout life.”
As part of the Australia Day event, Mayor Wilson presented certificates to 64 new Australians who took their citizenship pledge.
They hailed from 24 different countries including Chile, Nepal, Nigeria and South Korea.
“You, your family and friends are joining us in a celebration of who we are as a nation and what we share,” Mayor Wilson said at the ceremony.
“Each of you here have something unique that belongs only to you, and we welcome your uniqueness.”
