The City of Holdfast Bay has a rich history spanning thousands of years. We offer many history services including a dedicated History Centre and the Bay Discovery Centre.
Holdfast Bay History Centre
The Holdfast Bay History Centre aims to preserve and raise awareness of the City of Holdfast Bay's heritage. Onsite, volunteers manage historical enquiries from the public, conduct research and help look after our collection.
We are open every Thursday 10am-4pm or by appointment outside of these hours. if you have a particular research topic, we recommend completing the below research enquiry form so we can help in advance.
Please note that the Holdfast Bay History Centre will close from 1 December 2023 and reopen in February 2024.
The City of Holdfast Bay’s History Collection provides access to a range of research materials including its vast catalogue. Volunteers can help you with general research. Popular historic research topics include:
- family history
- local businesses
- war-related research
- house history report (currently paused for remainder of 2023)
Please note the history collection and research materials are held onsite at the Holdfast Bay History Centre which are accessible on Thursdays or by appointment. The estimated turnaround time for requests can be up to one month, depending on the backlog.

Please note that the Holdfast Bay History Centre will close from 1 December. After the 15 of December our online research program will close until February 2024, please submit enquiries as early as possible.

Please note we are currently unable to provide in person speakers for external events. We highly recommend booking a visit to the Bay Discovery Centre to view our historical museum and changing exhibitions.

Brighton Historical Society
Founded in 1983 the Society aims to enthuse people about the history of Brighton, to record the changing character of Brighton, and work closely with the Holdfast Bay History Centre.
The Society will officially close at the end of 2023. For further information or local history enquiries fill out a research enquiry above.
