Climate Ready Communities

The Australian Red Cross, in partnership with Adelaide’s Resilient South councils, have launched an exciting new project to help communities prepare for intensified extreme events and a changing climate.

The Resilient South Climate Ready Communities Project is empowering people to understand the risks they currently face, the way these are changing, and what they can do to build their resilience.

The project is calling for Climate Ready Champions. These community champions will be supported by Red Cross through free training about how you can support others take action to become ‘climate ready’, practical guidance to deliver activities and events in Adelaide’s south, and the opportunity to get involved in Red Cross’ emergency response and preparedness activities.

Climate Change

The City of Holdfast Bay recognises climate change as the most complex problem of our generation. On behalf of its coastal community the City of Holdfast Bay has an immediate responsibility to respond to forecast climate change implications.

Our climate change response strategies are based on four core areas of activity:

  • mitigation of energy usage
  • adaptation to impacts
  • offsets of unavoidable emissions
  • community leadership.

Responding to and reducing the effects of changing climate requires a whole government approach and is included in the Our Place Strategic Plan 2030 under the Environment Pillar.

Resilient South

An initiative of the cities of Holdfast Bay, Marion, Mitcham and Onkaparinga, the Resilient South project is about what we can do in the Southern Region to make sure our businesses, communities, and environments can tackle the challenges of climate change.

Changes in our climate, such as higher temperatures, declining rainfall, and rising sea levels require active management of risks. The Resilient South project will also seek to harness opportunities presented by these changes, so that the region continues to thrive and prosper.

The Resilient South project is supported by the South Australian and Australian Governments. The project has entered its implementation phase after producing a Climate Change Adaptation Plan for the whole region, with input from government, business and community organisations.
