Therapy dogs spread the joy at Christmas

Tuesday 7 December 2021

Forget Donna, Dancer, Prancer or Vixen … instead meet Olivia, Sallee, Zak and Bayley, who are spreading the joy of Christmas in their festive costumes.

The four Border Collies are our Holdfast Hounds for December and are usually seen walking the halls at Alwyndor.

They visit twice-weekly with their owners Nan and Kevin Sharp (who own the two female dogs. The male dogs belong to their daughter Mardi Tero).

Nan and Kevin have taken the dogs for therapy visits to Alwyndor for at least six years, bringing joy to the residents faces as they work their way around, going from room-to-room.

“They are very well trained dogs, but sometimes I wonder if we’re there for the residents, or the families or staff,” said Nan, who said the dogs love the attention and pats they receive too.

Nan has been taking her dogs to aged care homes for almost two decades, but when COVID hit, they had to make a choice to visit one only. They choose Alwyndor, which Kevin described as the “best one”.

“We’ve met some very nice people,” he said.

If you are visiting Alwyndor, with or without your dog, you must show proof of a 2021 flu shot and two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine (unless you have an approved exemption or if you are under 12 years old).

Residential visiting hours are as follows.

  • Christmas Day, 25 December, 9am - 6pm
  • Boxing Day, 26 December CLOSED
  • 27 December open 10am - 4pm
  • Proclamation Day, 28 December CLOSED
  • New Year’s Day 10am - 4pm
  • 3 January CLOSED
