September's Tree of the Month honour goes to...

The local residents of College Street in Glenelg love their street trees – a small grove of New Zealand Christmas trees, one of which boasts a spectacular display of aerial roots.

In fact they love them so much that they banded together to protect two of the trees that were under threat from a nearby development.

“We like this little wood” said Steve, pictured centre with his neighbours (from L-R), George, Bev, Trina and Dave.

One of the trees now, the Pohutukawa with the aerial roots, now bears the blue Tree of the Month sash for September, but the honour is for all of the street’s trees.
