Apply to council before replacing your verge
Wednesday 5 January 2022
If you’re revamping your verge, which is council owned but maintained by householders, here’s a list of allowed verge treatments, and others you should avoid.
Council recently updated its Verge Management Policy which strongly encourages the use of permeable treatments on verges across the city.
Artificial turf currently used on verges can remain, but cannot be reinstated once the turf reaches its end of life.
Permitted verge treatments include:
- Lawn/grass
- Mulch
- ️Low Plants
- Permeable paving
Verge treatments that are not permitted include:
- Artificial turf
- Raised edges
- Plants that cannot be maintained to a maximum height of 500mm
- Plants with spines or thorns, or are declared as pest plants
- Concrete or non-permeable paving
Please apply to council before you change your verge by filling in a verge development form which does not incur any fees.
