Community Donations Program

The Community Donations Program strengthens the community through support for non-profit organisations, local community and sporting groups and schools. Funding is awarded to initiatives that will make a positive contribution to the community and cultural life of the city.

Community Recreation and Wellbeing Donations

The purpose of the Recreation and Wellbeing Donations program is to strengthen the community through supporting ‘not for profit’ organisations, community groups and sporting groups, to make positive contributions to the community and enhance vibrancy of the City.

The program aims to provide support to organisations and clubs to increase opportunities for participating in physical activity, healthy eating and general community wellbeing initiatives that support the City of Holdfast Bay's "Our Place" 2030 Strategic Plan.

How Much Can You Apply For?

You may apply for a donation of up to 50% of the project cost to a maximum of $5,000 (plus GST where applicable) in the areas of:

  • physical activity
  • healthy eating and nutrition
  • mental health
  • sport and recreation
  • youth
  • social inclusion

*Please be aware funds are subject to the Community Donations Program budget allocated for the relevant financial year.

What is the Eligibility Criteria?

  • Your club/organisation must be a not-for-profit group, community group or voluntary association that is located within the City of Holdfast Bay or whose service area covers the City of Holdfast Bay.
  • Your club/organisation must be established as a legally constituted incorporated organisation or be auspiced by an incorporated organisation who will receive the payment and be legally responsible for the administration of the donation.
  • Your club/organisation must have an Australian Business Number (ABN) or be prepared to fill out a ‘Statement by a Supplier’ declaration form from the Australian Taxation Office.
  • Your club/organisation must be able to show that the project has an identified benefit to the wider community and must be located within the Council area.
  • Schools and Early Learning Centres are eligible to apply if the initiative has an identified benefit to the wider community outside of the school environment and is accessible by the wider community.
  • Your club/organisation must be able to demonstrate how the project aligns with the City of Holdfast Bay “Our Place” 2030 Strategic Plan.

Ineligible Projects:

  • Programs, projects or activities that have already commenced.
  • Club/organisations with outstanding Financial Project Reports from previous grant funding.
  • Projects that will take place outside of the City of Holdfast Bay Council boundary.
  • Fundraising or sponsorship.
  • Salaries or wages (professional services related to the project are acceptable).
  • Interstate or overseas travel.
  • Education fees or conference costs.
  • Political purposes or lobby groups.
  • Minor equipment purchases that are ongoing. Equipment purchases included must be for new initiatives that will increase membership and/or benefit the wider community.
  • Ongoing expenses including stationary, postage and supplies.
  • Maintenance, repairs or building changes which will be permanently part of the structure.
  • A purpose where core funding rests with state or federal government.
Events and Festivals Donations

The City of Holdfast Bay is a sustainable, well serviced, safe and cohesive seaside community that enjoys an outstanding quality of life, welcomes visitors and values the City’s distinctive history and open space.

Hosting vibrant events is vital in increasing visitation and economic development, and enhancing social and community benefits, including community activity, civic pride and the reputation of the area as a great place to live, work and play. One of the City of Holdfast Bay’s greatest strengths is its impressive calendar of public events. The City is well equipped to host events of local, national and international significance.

The purpose of the Events and Festivals Donations program is to support and provide opportunities for ‘not for profit’ organisations, clubs, groups, and collectives to deliver innovative creative events and festivals within the City of Holdfast Bay that align with the City of Holdfast Bay “Our Place” 2030 Strategic Plan.

How Much Can You Apply For?

Event organisers may apply for a donation of up to 50% of the event/festival cost to a maximum of $5,000 (plus GST where applicable) for festivals and events that contribute to the community in the following ways:

  • Strengthen a sense of community belonging and pride
  • Enhancing community participation
  • Foster social and cultural diversity
  • Stimulate the local economy
  • Promote the Holdfast Bay Council region as a tourism destination
  • Achieve minimal environmental impact as well as minimal adverse impact to residents.

Arts and Cultural Donations

The purpose of the Arts & Cultural Donations program is to support and provide opportunities for ‘not for profit’ arts and cultural organisations, groups, collectives and individuals to deliver innovative creative arts and cultural activities.

This program aims to represent a broad range of art forms and activities that contribute to public spaces and/or promote cultural vitality, creativity and connection within the city. The program also supports arts and cultural activities that encourage participation by people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

The City of Holdfast Bay is committed to providing an engaging, vibrant and interactive environment through arts and culture. We recognise the benefits of supporting creative expression and supporting arts and cultural events and experiences for people to encounter and enjoy.

Donation Categories

The Arts & Cultural Donations program is divided into two categories:

1. Arts & Cultural Development Projects

Funding is for exhibitions, performances, multi-media projects, multicultural projects or programs and arts initiatives that celebrate and contribute to a vibrant cultural, artistic and multicultural city.

2. Public Art Projects

Funding is for emerging or established artists to create public artworks within the city’s public spaces. Concepts can include but are not limited to sculptural works, paste ups, multimedia projections, street performances or murals. Proposals can include temporary or permanent concepts.

How Much Can You Apply For?

Arts & Cultural Development Projects (up to $3,500)

You may apply for a donation of up to 70% of the total project cost to a maximum of $3,500 (plus GST where applicable).

Public Art Projects (up to $2,000)

You may apply for a donation of up to 100% of the total project cost to a maximum of $2,000 (plus GST where applicable).

  • A purpose where core funding rests with state or federal government.

2019 – 2020 Community Donations Program

Applications for the 2019-2020 Community Donations Program will open in mid-2019 and will be submitted via SmartyGrants, an online application tool. SmartyGrants allows users to work on their application progressively and securely. Council staff will provide more information closer to the donations opening dates.

Community Chest Donations

Applications will be accepted throughout the year for Community Chest Donations of up to $500. Community Chest Donations are small 'one off' payments to assist individuals and organisations within the Council area with costs associated with community development initiatives such as; small community events and projects that will have benefits to the surrounding community.

To apply please submit an online application via SmartyGrants that outlines the following criteria:

  • The particulars of your community development initiative
  • The amount you are requesting and the total cost of the program
  • Your own contribution (financial and in-kind)
  • Expected outcomes of your program or project
  • How you will acknowledge Council's contribution

Youth Achievement Sponsorship Program

The Youth Achievement Sponsorship Program recognises and encourages the achievements of young people in the community. We provide sponsorship for young people 21 years and under, who are representing their sport or cultural activity at State and/or National level.

To be eligible for sponsorship, applicants need to:

  • Be a resident of the City of Holdfast Bay
  • Be aged 21 or under at the time of the competition
  • Be representing South Australia or Australia
  • Be able to provide a letter/email of selection from the peak body or the association running the event.
  • Have not received sponsorship from Council in the current financial year unless the competition results in selection at a higher level e.g. State to National representation.

Applications will be accepted throughout the year, but are subject to budgetary limitations and available funds.

Greening Our Community

Applications for the 2018/2019 Greening Our Community grants program closed at 5pm on Friday 20 July 2018.
Since 2011-12 Greening Our Community grant of up to $5000 have been available to community groups to undertake environmentally themed projects which involve one or more of the following;

biodiversity conservationwater conservationenergy reduction or renewable energywaste reductioneducational programs focusing on sustainability themes

Heritage Fund Grants

The Heritage Fund Grants Scheme assists the owners of Local Heritage Places with conservation works. For further

Shopfront Grants

The next round of Shopfront Grants will open on Monday 3 September and close on Friday 12 October at 5pm. Grants of up to $5,000 are available, matched on a $1:$1 basis from the 2018/19 financial year budget.

The City of Holdfast Bay Shopfront Fund Grants program assists the owners and/or tenants of buildings within the Jetty Road Brighton and Jetty Road Glenelg precincts to enhance their exterior appearances. Brighton and Glenelg are historic and vibrant tourism destinations and enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. For this reason maintaining the appearance of shop fronts and the buildings adds to the character, heritage and charm of these precincts.

Small Business Grants

We are offering Small Business Development Grants to new or existing businesses. The grants are available to businesses that can demonstrate an ongoing benefit to the city, create increased participation by the local community and those who are keen to work collaboratively and foster new partnerships across the city. The program encourages businesses to propose innovative, creative and sustainable business initiatives.
