About Community Gardens

Our community gardens are welcoming, inclusive spaces where people come together to grow fresh food, learn new skills, relax in nature, and build meaningful connections. We support community gardening because it strengthens local resilience, promotes sustainable living, and contributes to a healthier, more connected, and more equitable community.

A community garden is a shared open space where people come together to learn about sustainable living, share knowledge, and enjoy the many social, cultural, and environmental benefits of gardening together.

A successful community garden:

  • Welcomes and reflects the diversity of the local community
  • Promotes accessible gardening practices for people with different abilities
  • Encourages collaboration, shared decision-making, and respect
  • Demonstrates sustainable gardening and water-wise techniques
  • Supports social connection, cultural expression, and community pride

Community gardens offer a range of benefits, including:

  • Access to fresh, nutritious food
  • A sense of achievement from growing your food
  • Meeting new people and strengthening community connections
  • Generational and cross-cultural learning opportunities
  • Growing culturally significant foods and sharing traditions

  • Improved mental and physical wellbeing through outdoor activity

  • Increased local food security and connection to the environment

  • Participation in workshops, working bees, and creative garden activities

  • A safe, inclusive environment where everyone is respected and supported
